I'm not sure what the problem is, here is what I do:

$ gnunet-publish -k dirtest dir/
Publishing `/home/grothoff/dir/be-deutsch.mp4' done.
URI is
Publishing `/home/grothoff/dir/inria-skynet.png' done.
URI is
Publishing `/home/grothoff/dir/' done.
URI is

$ gnunet-search dirtest
gnunet-download -o "dir_.gnd" -R

(Note that my peer will be offline soon as my machine is next to my bed
& it is too noisy, so downloading will likely fail for you for that reason.)

Or are you looking for gnunet-auto-share? (Which I didn't test
particularly recently.)
