I compiled it on FreeBSD 7 over the weekend and it was complaining  
that GNUSTEP_INSTALLATION_DIR was deprecated. I added  
GNUSTEP_INSTALLATION_DOMAIN=SYSTEM and it worked fine.
I would like to help wherever I can.
