Thanks, that was useful. I think it gave me enough information to push a
fix for the malformed-GSV problem.  But getting mode-switching right on the
u-blox 8 is going to take more work - I think I know how to get there but
it will take testing with a live specimen to verify that I have code that
wuill operate across all u-blox varants.
