Well, I had a bit of tongue in cheek when I recalled the ancient history with the PDP8/PDP11 but those are near and dear to my heart

as they were my first "computers" and it was a love affair of both pain and pleasure interfacing lab equipment to those DE boxes.

the RS-232C 12V 20mA serial line is still quite evident in agriculture and organic chemistry sensors and lab equipment.

Push comes to shove, use a Serial-to-USB dongle (FTDI chip) and just drop the RTS/CTS signals

Thanks for the serious answer to a question intended as humor.  In all
seriousness I have not encounted a true +/- 12V RS232 line in a very
long time.

Thanks for the labjack pointer - that looks like interesting stuff that
is not super expensive.
