It doesn't *have* to, but 80 columns are still pretty standard on terminals.
I noticed this today after installing grep 3.2 on one of my students'
servers at UCLA's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. I logged
in to check the installation, and the last line of 'grep --version'
output looked bad (see attached), with the URL split jarringly across
line boundaries. The too-long line stuck out particularly here, since
everything else on the screen was nicely lined up (perhaps too nicely :-).
