Just a sideways thought, but it seems to me that we should be modifying
the man command so it can read HTML-formatted man pages. When releasing
a product, it's good to build the HTML so the doc can be posted on the web,
perhaps searchable along with all the other doc for the product, so if man
can use the HTML files, you don't have to do a separate build of the man
pages into ASCII for man to read.
Granted, the separate build of the manpages is just machine time, but they
also have to be checked and so forth. It's a big time saver if you can just
check/test the HTML build and then do a bit of smoke testing to be sure that
the man command is displaying the HTML correctly.
This is what SCO did for the man command on its UNIX systems and it works
pretty well. They did it by internally combining lynx with man. I'm not
a completely unbiased observer on this, but I think it's a good direction
to take.
