Please read the latest version of groff.texinfo (from 1.18) -- it
should cover troff *completely* up to the smallest details.  No excuse
for such answers anymore :-) Any omission or unclarity in
groff.texinfo is a bug and should be reported.

For convenience, I've just uploaded the groff manual in PDF format to

[You need texinfo 4.2 if you want to format groff.texinfo to dvi, pdf,
or html; after a ./configure, change into the doc subdirectory and say
`make groff.{dvi,pdf,html}'.]
