If it's of any interest, an old AIX 3.2.5 eqn gives

    $ (echo .EQ; echo f f; echo .EN) | eqn
    .lf 1 -
    .EQ
    .ds 11 "\f2\^f\fP
    .ds 12 "\f2\^f\fP
    .as 11 "\*(12
    .if 1m>\n(.v .ne 1m
    .rn 11 10
