I think I am walking where angels fear to tread.McGlinton & McNabb in "Typesetting Tables on the Unix System" give examples of nested tables using diversions :-)
It seems to me that, using diversions, one can put just about anything in tables -- except, maybe, text.
As you can see, I'm quite excited about hdtbl, and I'll invest a lot of time in the next days to integrate it into the groff framework.
Despite what I've just written I shall welcome any overhaul of groff's tables capabilities.
