I was actually using it to

This is highly timing dependent so may differ for host, qemu, number
and speed of CPU versions etc.

Try to enable serial console (-serial stdio) and see if OVMF crashed.

I have an idea what happens, I'll try to work on it at weekend. It
should make your patch unnecessary.
