examples and testing

Hello folks,

I have just committed a set of checks and build fixes to CVS stable
branch, which will build the example programs on `make all' and run
checks in every examples subdirectory on `make check'.  I have tried
to make sure that everything builds fine even without an installed
version of Guile (GNU stow is great!), but I encourage everyone to try
it out on as many different machines as possible.

In the long run, the checks will (hopefully) help us to keep the
examples in sync with code changes, and to find bugs in less-often
used parts of the code.

Thi: thanks for getting me started, please feel free to check if I
have correctly implemented testing of compiled code.
