Subject: | [Halevt-dev] halevt user cannot change speed on /dev/dvd |

Hi!
I am using halevt to force my dvd player to use a more reasonable rotation speed to make it more enjoyable to watch movies on my HTPC. As default, the acoustic noise is unbearable. The config file dvd-speed.xml found at
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=62923 does a good job.
However, halevt does not work as-installed for this.
I get "permission denied" for the line "/sbin/hdparm -E4 /dev/dvd"
when I do "halevt -d", while "halevt -d -u root" works.
This setting in /etc/default/halevt does not work for the same reasons.
START_DAEMON=yes
HALEVT_USER=halevt
HALEVT_GROUP=plugdev
This setting in /etc/default/halevt works:
START_DAEMON=yes
HALEVT_USER=root
HALEVT_GROUP=plugdev
Is it safe to use root as the HALEVT_USER?
Would it not be better to give user halevt enough rights to do this task?
