(What Henning wrote about is rather query by region, if I remember right, but 
it might be  a starting point.)

I think in your situation, it would be best to look into how SVG (scalable 
vector graphics, based on XML) treats sketches and embed SVG documents into 
MRML. I would call this query-item, too, and I would just leave the tags 
empty.

What do you think about that?
