Hi,

the latest version should usually always be in the CVS at:
http://savannah.gnu.org/

There are several articles on GIFT and its architecture but detailed 
document is definitly not one of the strongest points of GIFT.
You can find the articles at viper.unige.ch (the early ones from 1999-2002).
