It begins to sound as if gtk2/pango actually converts the text like
that when it puts it into the selection buffer.

Maybe, but then why are the other non gtk2 apps like xedit, kedit, kate, open office, able to insert it properly?



Perhaps you should post a question to some forum related to gtk2
development, or google for similar issues.

I'll see what I can find...
