Error in JDE mode

When I enter JDE mode in XEmacs on Solaris I get the following error:


Invalid regexp: "Invalid syntax designator"

(1) (warning/warning) Error caught in `font-lock-pre-idle-hook'
I am using a distributed binary of XEmacs version 21.1.3. I downloaded the sumo distribution of packages and installed them, and they all seem to be the latest version. Any suggestions?
