Can't start default ML compiler |

I have opened a file called test.sml (I have GNU emacs with at SML mode) and
then there is a button in themenu called SML. When I press this button I can
choose "Process" and then "Start default ML compiler". But the last option
is not available because its in light grey! What am I doing wrong?
