That's what the external w3m command does:

$ echo '<SUP>a</SUP>test' | w3m -halfdump -T text/html
^atest
<internal>
</internal>

The external w3m command has its own rule to interpret not only
<SUP> but also other tags. Some are converted into others and
some are ignored.  For instance:

$ echo '<strong>a</strong>' | w3m -halfdump -T text/html
<b>a</b>
<internal>
</internal>

And then emacs-w3m processes and displays those outputs.

So, if you want w3m to work with the <SUP> tag in some way for
example, please contact the w3m team[1].  The emacs-w3m team[2]
will follow w3m changes soon.
