This is not true. GNU Emacs, when running as a command line programme without own windows, then has no access to the windowing system. As almost all other command line programmes (some have, they can insert for example the contents of the clipboard or put a text into an X selection). In case GNU Emacs' host, in your case the Eterm utility, has access to the windowing system, you can use the host's capabilities. This works in a few terminal emulations under X11 or Apple's Aqua.
