No need to drop zsh, just set a proper regex for
tramp-shell-prompt-pattern. This is what works for me:

  (setq tramp-shell-prompt-pattern "^[^$>\n]*[#$%>] *\\(\[[0-9;]*[a-zA-Z] 
*\\)*")
