I am running Emacs23 on Ubuntu Karmic. This is in my .emacs:
;; color theme
;
(add-to-list 'load-path "~/elisp/color-theme-6.6.0")
(require 'color-theme)
(eval-after-load "color-theme"
'(progn
(color-theme-initialize)
(color-theme-charcoal-black)))
Of course you choose whatever theme you like.
