Disable OS window Prompts

I'm using 25.1.1 from my Linux repos. With this version, thingslike git push commands cause OS windows prompting for username andpassword; I much preferred the old in-Emacs prompts. For the lifeof me I can't figure out how to go back, though. Help please?
