I see, but if I configure the usb stick with (hd0,0), then I
just get a "grub>" prompt. I don't see the usual list of titles
to select from. Running

        find /boot/grub/stage1

in this session I get

        (hd1,2)

i.e. (hd0,0) is not found at all :-(.

Just to be sure: the bios lists the usb stick as a hard drive.
