Grub2 editable floppy?

after trying a lot I can create a iso-fs'ed grub floppy with:

grub-mkrescue --diet -o fd.img /bootcfd/
cp fd.img /dev/fd0

(with my custom grub.cfg in the bootcfd tree)

Yet this results in a read-only iso9660 floppy, where files (grub.cfg) cannot be edited.

Is there a option to make a rw grub2 floppy with editable file systems minix/ext2/vfat .. ?

The "--image-type=floppy" option or "grub-mkfloppy" of former grub versions is not supported anymore. But maybe they created iso's too anyway.
