Were you using openSUSE or some other distro that offers both Grub Legacy and
Grub2? By default on openSUSE 12.2, both /boot/grub and /boot/grub2 exist,
because regardless which is actually installed, YaST has to be competent to
manage both. That could be a big obstacle if the files of both were
intermingled in /boot/grub.
OpenSUSE did the same thing when KDE3 and KDE4 were both offered at the same
time. It kept KDE3's settings in ~/.kde, and put KDE4 settings in ~/.kde4,
and still does, since it still provides support for using KDE3.
