Upstream grub legacy returns error 14 only if symlink is too long. I
highly doubt this is the case; but as upstream also does not check for
incompatible flags and you have ext4 it is quite possible that is simply
fails to correctly interpret metadata.

In any case, you should ask question on support channel of distribution
that provided your grub legacy. Each distribution carried own set of
patches so it is in the best position to answer questions about grub
legacy behavior.
