status of this package, error building 1.8.0

Ciao,

  I am trying  once again to use  this package; what is  its status?  Is
there someone actually maintaining it?

  Anyway,  on my  system (x86_64-slackware-linux-gnu):  64-bit libraries
are under the "lib64" directories  and the configuration script fails to
find Libiconv because it insists in generating "libgsasl.la" holding the
pathname "/usr/local/lib/libiconv.la":

   $grep libiconv lib/src/libgsasl.la 
   dependency_libs=' -L/usr/local/lib64 /usr/local/lib64/libidn.la 
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.la /usr/local/lib64/libiconv.la'

notice that "/usr/local/lib" does not exist on my system.

  This is after configuring with:

   $ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --libdir=/usr/local/lib64

and getting the following summary:
