I use gsl on my PowerBook (OS 10.4) installed from the HMUG web site:

http://www.hmug.org/pub/MacOS_X/BSD/Libraries/Math/gsl/


Works flawlessly for 2 years for now. Installing is simple and  
straightforward.
I use XCode just to create source files, no problems.
