Doesn't xinit bypass this problem?

Using xinit has been working for me instead of startx.

But, is he still going to run into an auth problem where you need root
priviledges? Unless you run:

              addauth --user=utmp

Is this a problem with the current state of the distribution?

The symptom of that problem was not being able to start additional
programs under X once it is running.
