It has nothing to do with what kind of file-system you are using.

even if grub is unaffected by disclabels, sometimes i find files on ext2 & ffs that should be gone or updated. only (hd0,1)/boot/grub/menu.lst remains, which includes:
for netbsd: root (hd0,3)
for linux: root (hd0,5), kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5
however grub uses old info, not (hd0,3) & (hd0,5) or /boot/vmlinuz/dev/hda5 (doc is unclear /boot must be in front of kernel).
