GNU make 3.74 is old, and it does have a few minor bugs.  There are also
a number of features supported by newer versions of GNU make, that 3.74
doesn't support.

But, 3.74 does work well for the vast majority of Makefiles.  There's
absolutely no way we can tell you anything else since you didn't say
what errors you're getting, what platform you're running on, or anything
other useful information.
