spaces in directory names vpath

Greetings,

Is it possible to include directory names containing spaces in vpath?

For example:

vpath %.c /usr/local/foo\ bar


where /usr/local/foo\ bar is a directory containing C sources.  When I
looked at the 3.81 sources, it looked like vpath is always separated
using isblank().  Is there any way around this?
