This isn't really a gnu make question, but, assuming your compiler is
gcc, add '-pg' to CFLAGS and LDFLAGS and rebuild from scratch, e.g.:
  CFLAGS='-pg' LDFLAGS='-pg' ./configure && make
then use the profiler 'gprof', which is part of gnu binutils.
