I found this $(eval$(call ...)) very interesting too and there is a simply example that generates rules in the make docomentation chapter 8.6 (call) and 8.8 (eval).

Sorry, but i thought that's exactly what i did. i'm not going to rewrite it for you to 100% match your use-case, but the pattern demonstrated there is one way to solve the problem you asked about:


$(eval $(call png_rule,foo.R))
