However, making that fix still didn't fix the problem for me in GNU make
3.82.  However checking the latest CVS version I see that it works as

        $ grep twice.dep Makefile
        another: twice.dep
        .INTERMEDIATE: twice.dep
        $ rm -f once* twice*; make-cvs oncetwice
        oncetwice: once twice
        rm once.dep twice.dep
