on top of everything you wrote, look at the number of "sleep" calls
sprinkled around ... pretty clear someone knew there were timing
issues:
$ grep -r sleep *
AFI/Makefile: sleep 2
AFI/Makefile: sleep 2
AFI/Makefile: sleep 2
AFI/Makefile: sleep 2
AFI/Makefile: sleep 2
AFI/Makefile: sleep 2
AFI/Makefile: sleep 2

man, this looks fragile.
