Okay.  First a question.  Are you able to build nano from source?
From a tarball?

If you can do that, then before running ./configure inside the source
directory, put the patch in that directory too, and then you do:

    patch -p1 <0001-startup-allow-*.patch

Then you run ./configure && make.  Done.
