  this could be because 'octave' believes that 'fx1_o.m' is a script
  file, probably because it does not start with.

function foo = fx1_o(bar)

  When 'octave' has a problem with a file, it acts somewhat like a
flip-flop, once trying to compile the file, the other time exectuting
