Eh... a bit later I did 'touch zgehrd.f', ran make again, and apparently I
got further now (is this normal?).

Now I get:

c++ -shared -o amos/pic/dgamln.o amos/pic/xzabs.o
...<snip>...misc/pic/f77-fcn.o misc/pic/lo-error.o
Signal 127
make[2]: *** [] Error 255
make[1]: *** [libcruft] Error 2
make: *** [all] Error 2

Is this because of the --enable-shared?
