Compiling octave on Mandrake

Thanks all for your help. I solved the problem. Here are some usefull

If you discover missing libraries during a compile, and install them,
you must

* do a make clean on the distribution before you try a new compile.
There may be old object files littered around that it will not be able
to link to.

* The configure script will not have discovered the new items and hence
will still "direct" and incorrect make. You should remove .config.cache
and then run ./configure again.

I hope this saves you a few hours of head scratching.
