The manual that comes with octave (look for the file "octave_toc.html" in
your octave installation) is quite good. If that is too much text, you can
find a terse, yet sufficiently thorough introduction under
http://lionel.kr.hs-niederrhein.de/~dalitz/data/lehre/CBM/octave-4up.ps.gz.
