Octave 2.1.57 installation problem?

I just built 2.1.57 under Linux and installed it.  I ran configure with no
special options, except "--prefix=$HOME/opt-linux/octave-2.1.57".

Now, when running Octave, I cannot find any of the standard installed .oct
or .m files.  Have I done something wrong?
