hi shan and quentin,
i m still stuck with the problem and i badly want octave with symbolic toolbox. can u guys plz tell me wht shd i do to resolve the issue ( i cant change linux version :( )..

Actually, that's a good idea--I'll look into it. The /etc/ld.so.conf.d stuff actually wasn't my idea--it was added by whoever was maintaining the Fedora Core package before it was moved to extras and I took over.
