I don't quite understand your question but in octave 2.9 (in octave-forge) there
is a legend function that allows you to change the legend outside the plot
function. Is this what you want?
x=0:0.05:3;
plot(x, sin(x), ';sin(x);', x, cos(x), ';cos(x);');
legend('Two functions');
