plot very slow in 2.9.12

Hi

I just tried 2.9.12 recently (after using 2.1.57 for a
long time) and experienced that the plot function is
_very_ slow, i.e. even the simplest plot takes about
5s(!) to finish. What could be wrong here? I know that
a lot has changed for plots, but still I can't believe
that
this is 'normal'.
