Yes I have more than one version installed. I have MSVC 6, MSVC 2003 and MSVC
2005 express edition.
After reading your reply, I rearrange the PATH, INCLUDE and LIB environments so
that the SDK and MSVC appear first in the PATH, INCLUDE and LIB, but my attempt
was fruitless.
So, I have planned to set up a virtual machine (clean Window XP) and will try
to install the MSVC and SDK and then octave. I will let you know of the outcome.

I tried your example on my installation and it worked OK, so it's probably a
configuration problem. You should check whether the complete MSVC environment
is available in your DOS prompt: PATH, INCLUDE, LIBS...
Do you have another MSVC version installed?
