I
did have a previous version of Octave, which I had un-installed. It appears the
uninstaller does not remove or modify the .octaverc file, which was sitting in
my %HOMEPATH%. I did an uninstall just to check, and the .octaverc file was
still there, so I removed the .octaverc file and everything works well now.
