Open source work environments

Dear group,

This message may be a little bit out of the ordinary technical request for
help regarding octave; but here goes ...

I am a low temperature experimental physicist who has worked in industry for
a few years. While in graduate school there were several research groups who
had embraced free software and had become quiet efficient at doing a number
of different kinds of tasks.

At each of the companies that I worked for, neither embraced free or open
source software. I would run into situations where I knew I could attack a
particular problem with a Linux based piece of software; but, the company's
culture prevented this and the project's budget wouldn't allow for buying
similar commercial software packages.

As I look forward and try and develop a strategy for my next job, I would
like to work in an environment that promotes/uses/allows free software.
Other than software development companies can the group suggest some
industrial companies involved in research and development that use free
software ?

Best Regards,
