Was not rhetorical :) I have never used the edit command, as I prefer
using Octave inside Emacs (M-x inferior-octave).
Anyway I do not see how ever can Octave ignore the case. Maybe you use
Windows, whose file system ignores case? But in that case, shouldn't it
be Emacs.exe?
