pkg is not found

GNU Octave, version 2.1.73 (i386-apple-darwin8.5.3).


I installed octave via macports.  when I try to use loadable functions, such as 
pkg, no command is found.

     octave:2> pkg list 
     parse error:

       syntax error

     >>> pkg list


On another machine with the same macports installation, pkg is found as is many 
other 'loadable' functions.



Any ideas?  I do not find any differences in octaverc files from one machine to 
the next.
